Police nab man, 63, over suspected drug trafficking in Akwa Ibom

The Akwa Ibom State police command says it apprehended a 63-year old man over suspected involvement in drug trafficking in the state.

The command’s spokesman, DSP Timfom John, said in a statement in Uyo on Thursday that substance suspected to be Indian hemp was recovered from the suspect.

Ms John said that at about 9.30p.m on, Wednesday, the command received credible intelligence concerning suspected trafficking of illicit drugs from Atabong Park en route Esit Eket.

“We mobilised for a stop-and-search operation, and in the process, we apprehended a 63-year old man. A thorough search conducted on the suspect led to the recovery of two large bags containing substances strongly suspected to be ‘hemp’

“Preliminary investigation has revealed that the substance was given to the suspect by a serving soldier for onward delivery,” she said.

She stated that the command had commenced discreet investigations on the matter, with a view to uncovering the cartel behind the illicit drug trafficking.

Ms John stated that the state Commissioner of Police, Baba Azare, warned those involved in drug trafficking and other activities to desist or face the full weight of the law.

She said, “I urge members of the public to continue supporting the police with timely and credible information in order to enable us to effectively combat crime.”
