A Jos Magistrates’ Court on Thursday sentenced a 25-year-old labourer, Abubakar Ado, to eight months in prison for stealing a phone.

The magistrate, Hannatu Ashom, sentenced Mr Ado after he pleaded guilty to a one-count charge of stealing.

Ms Ashom, however, gave the convict the option to pay a N50,000 fine and N21,000 in compensation to the complainant.

Earlier, the prosecutor, Ibrahim Gokwat, told the court that the case was reported on May 9 at the Nassarawa Gwong Police Station in Jos by Gift Samuel, the complainant.

Mr Gokwat said that the defendant stole a phone valued at N21,000 from the complainant.

He said that the defendant was tracked and arrested.

Mr Gokwat said the offence contravened the Plateau Penal Code Law.
