The police command in Benue has commenced a statewide enforcement exercise against vehicles with covered, obscured, unauthorised or defaced number plates, as well as unregistered vehicles, from Friday.

The command’s spokesperson, Edet Udeme, disclosed in a statement.

Ms Udeme said the exercise was in compliance with the directive of the inspector general of police, Olatunji Disu, which is aimed at strengthening security and enhancing crime prevention efforts.

She said the operation was designed to address security concerns stemming from the use of such vehicles by criminal elements to evade detection and commit unlawful acts.

According to her, the police commissioner, Cletus Nwadiogbu, had directed the deputy commissioner of police in charge of operations, area commanders, divisional police officers and tactical commanders to ensure compliance.

Mr Nwadiogbu appealed for strict, coordinated, and professional enforcement of the directive across the state.

“The command notes that the use of unregistered vehicles, covered or altered registration number plates, undermines policing efforts, hinders effective crime detection and investigation, and poses a serious threat to public safety and security,” he said.

The police spokesman advised vehicle owners to ensure that their vehicles were duly registered and fitted with valid, clearly visible registration number plates at all times.

She also urged motorists to keep their vehicle documents up to date and readily available for inspection when required.

Ms Udeme assured residents that the exercise was not intended to inconvenience law-abiding citizens but was a proactive measure to enhance security and strengthen law enforcement operations in the state.

She added that the police commissioner had warned officers participating in the operation to conduct themselves professionally and in accordance with extant laws, while respecting citizens’ rights.

According to her, any officer found engaging in extortion, harassment or any form of misconduct during the exercise will face disciplinary action.

The command urged residents to remain vigilant and continue supporting security agencies by reporting suspicious persons, vehicles and activities to the nearest police station.

“Security remains a collective responsibility,” Ms Udeme stated.
