The Taraba State Judiciary (TSJ) says it is collaborating with the Taraba State Internal Revenue Service (TIRS) to boost revenue generation in the state.

The Chief Judge of Taraba, Justice Joel Agya, stated this on Friday while playing host to Brig. Gen. Jeremiah Faransa (Rtd), the executive chairman of TIRS and his management team in Jalingo.

Mr Agya commended the service for its reforms, saying that they had significantly improved the state’s revenue generation.

According to him, courts in the state have, in 2026, remitted N198 million into the state coffers despite not being revenue-generating agencies.

He also noted that the adoption of technology by the service had improved the revenue generation mechanism, stressing that the e-filing system in the courts had contributed tremendously to the remittance of revenue generated by the courts into the state coffers.

The chief judge also directed the deployment of judges who would administer mobile courts for tax collection and the enforcement of the state’s tax laws.

“Your presence here underscores the importance of partnership among key institutions of government in advancing the development of our dear State.

“The Judiciary and the Internal Revenue Service occupy distinct but complementary positions in the machinery of government.

“While the Judiciary is entrusted with the administration of justice and the protection of the rule of law, the Internal Revenue Service plays a vital role in mobilising the resources required for the government to provide essential services and infrastructure for our people.

“Effective revenue administration, conducted within the bounds of the law, contributes significantly to good governance and sustainable development.

“I am particularly encouraged by your desire to strengthen collaboration with the Judiciary and to discuss measures aimed at ensuring that officers of the service carry out their statutory responsibilities within the framework of the law and with the protection they require.

“I have no doubt that today’s engagement will deepen mutual understanding and foster a stronger institutional relationship,” he said.

Earlier, Mr Faransa commended the judiciary, under the leadership of Justice Agya, for playing a vital role in improving revenue generation in the state.

He requested the chief judge to support the TIRS with judicial manpower to complement the service’s efforts to enforce tax laws both within and outside the state.

Mr Faransa also disclosed that all the multiple accounts previously used for revenue collection in the state had been abolished.

He said the state had fully implemented the Treasury Single Account (TSA), transitioning to the Central Tax Billing System (CTBS).

He further said that the service was already working out modalities to commence the payment of the cost of revenue collection to revenue-remitting agencies in the state.

While promising to improve the state’s revenue generation profile, he noted that collaboration between the service and the judiciary was crucial to achieving the service’s mandate and set goals.
