The United States of America forward Folarin Balogun has emerged as one of the standout players to watch at the 2026 FIFA World Cup being co-hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico.

The performance of the 24-year-old at the tournament thanks to his pace, movement, and eye for goal, has drawn attention among football fans around, particularly in the U.S., where football is not the main sport.

From Super Eagles eligibility to unplanned U.S. citizenship, here are the six things football fans should know about Balogun amid his newly-found exposure:

Family background

As his name suggests, Folarin Balogun has Nigerian roots. He was born in the United States of America to Nigerian parents before growing up in the United Kingdom, where he began his football journey and developed through the youth ranks.

Accidental U.S. citizen

The Peoples Gazette learnt that Balogun’s parents did not plan to give birth to him in the United States of America. However, in 2001, his parents travelled to the U.S. for a family vacation while his mother was seven months pregnant.

On the day they had intended to depart from the North American country, airline staff prevented his mother from flying due to safety concerns over her being heavily pregnant.

He was later born in Brooklyn, New York in July of that year, which automatically granted him U.S. citizenship by birthright.

Early career

Having moved back to the United Kingdom when he was only two months old, Balogun began his career at Arsenal academy at 8.

He went on to make two appearances for the senior team. Balogun subsequently enjoyed successful loan spells at Middlesbrough and Stade de Reims before securing a permanent move from Arsenal to AS Monaco in 2023.

International allegiance

At the international level, Balogun was eligible to represent Nigeria through his parents, the U.S. by birth and England, where he grew up. He, however, opted for the U.S. in 2023.

The ex-Arsenal player played for England across various youth levels as well as for the U.S. U-18 team. He has won two CONCACAF Nations League titles since making his senior appearance for the U.S. in 2023.

World Cup history

Balogun has become the American star of the tournament in the ongoing World Cup after scoring two goals in United States of America’s opening group game in the 4-1 win over Paraguay.

The brace meant he became the first player to score multiple goals in a single World Cup match for the U.S. since the inaugural edition of the tournament in 1930.

Head coach Mauricio Pochettino’s first choice

Under coach Mauricio Pochettino, the player has become the main point of the U.S. attack. His movement, pace, and finishing made him one of the team’s key players in the World Cup on home soil.

He created the attack that led to Australia’s own goal in the 2-0 loss to the United States of America in the second Group D match on Friday.
