Seadogs, FRSC join forces to reduce road crashes in Akwa Ibom
The National Association of Seadogs (NAS), Eket chapter, says it will collaborate with the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in its programme to promote safety on the roads.
The association’s President, Idongesit Ifon, said this during a “Safe driving awareness campaign” to Eket Township Motor Parks on Wednesday.
Mr Ifon, represented by Mr Okechukwu Mgbeahurike, said the association was partnering with the FRSC “to ensure safety on the roads in Eket and its environs.”
He described the theme of the event, “Road Safety Awareness Beyond Ember Months,” as apt, especially as ember months is approaching.
He said, “The journey is safe only when it starts and ends safely and a journey which didn’t end well is not a safe journey.”
In a remark, a Superintendent Route Commander and the resource person from FRSC, Eket Unit, Uko Utipime, urged road users and motorists to always obey road traffic rules and regulations.
“The three causes of road crashes include human factor, my factor and environmental factor,” Mr Utipime said.
He blamed some of the road crashes on excessive speeding and wrongful over taking by road users and motorists.
He advised road users and motorists to fix speed limiting device, in order to control the speed of their vehicles.
“The speed limiting device does not allow the driver to accelerate beyond the stipulated speed limit by the law as programmed in the vehicle,” Mr Utipime said.
He identified the three causes of road crashes to include human, mechanical, and environmental factors.
He blamed some of the road crashes on excessive speeding and wrong overtaking by motorists.
He urged road users and motorists to fix speed limiting devices in their vehicles in order to control the speed of the vehicles.
He listed the ways to safe driving to include checking one’s vehicle before entering the road, obeying speed limits and practising distance management, among others.
The association distributed 20 fire extinguishers to the two parks in Eket.
