Eight persons have died after a three-storey building collapsed in the Alakija area of Lagos on Thursday. 

The permanent secretary of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, Dr Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, made the disclosure in a statement.

He stated that eight people including a baby died in the incident and 26 others were rescued.

Mr Oke-Isanyintolu added that the building, located on Old Ojo Road by Alakija Bus Stop, off the Lagos-Badagry Expressway in Satellite Town, collapsed at 11:37 a.m.

He noted that the development triggered large-scale emergency response involving multiple agencies.

Also, the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service has said responders from Ijegun-Egba pulled out 10 victims alive from the rubble.

The LSFRS Controller General, Margaret Adeseye, in a statement, stated that the victims had been taken to the hospital for treatment, as rescue efforts continue.

Mr Oke-Osanyintolu added that the building, located on Old Ojo Road by Alakija Bus Stop, off the Lagos-Badagry Expressway in Satellite Town, collapsed at 11:37 a.m.

“Emergency responders from the Ijegun-Egba Fire Station were immediately mobilised and arrived at the scene at 11:49 hours. The incident involves the collapse of a storey building, an existing residential structure occupied by multiple residents at the time of the incident.

“As of the time of this report, 10 persons have been rescued alive with varying degrees of injury and have been handed over to medical personnel for necessary treatment. Search and rescue operations remain ongoing as emergency responders continue efforts to locate, extricate, and evacuate any persons who may still be trapped beneath the debris.”

The LSFRS named other agencies involved in the rescue efforts as the Federal Fire Service, police, navy, Lagos Neighbourhood Safety Corps (LNSC) and the Nigerian Red Cross Society.
