FG to integrate 80 million Nigerian students into NIMC database

The federal government says it is deepening its partnership with the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) to extend trusted digital identity coverage to nearly 80 million learners across Nigeria’s education system.
In a statement on Friday, Boriowo Folasade, the spokesperson for the federal ministry of education, said the government is committed to building a trusted digital identity ecosystem and collaborating with the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC).
Speaking during the meeting with the director general of NIMC, Bisoye Coker-Odusote, the Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa, described the NIMC Act, 2026, as a landmark reform that would strengthen governance, improve public service delivery and deepen public trust in digital identity systems.
He said the ministry had integrated the National Learners’ Identification Number (LIN) with the National Identification Number (NIN) through the Nigeria Education Management Information System (NEMIS).
“Nigeria’s education sector serves nearly 80 million learners across all levels of education,” the minister said.
On her part, Ms Odusote said more than 120 million Nigerians had been enrolled in the national identity database, adding that digital identity services were continuing to expand across the country.
The ministry said the collaboration with NIMC would strengthen secure digital identity, improve education service delivery and support national development.
