Eight killed, 34 missing in China landslide
A landslide struck Southwestern China’s municipality of Chongqing on Friday, killing at least eight people and leaving 34 others missing after burying residential buildings.
The landslide occurred at about 9:08 a.m. local time. Rescue teams pulled 10 people from the debris, including two who sustained serious injuries.
Chinese authorities said more than 1,000 residents were evacuated from the affected area.
Authorities further said massive amounts of rock and soil cascaded down a hillside, burying more than 10 residential buildings. Water, electricity, and gas supplies were cut within a one-kilometre radius as a precaution.
Chinese President Xi Jinping ordered all-out rescue efforts and directed authorities to investigate the cause of the disaster.
Mr Xi stressed the need to prevent secondary disasters, provide proper medical treatment to the injured, and effectively handle the aftermath.
