Mel Barlow appointed new British high commissioner to Brunei Darussalam

The United Kingdom’s Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office has announced the appointment of Mel Barlow as its new high commissioner to Brunei Darussalam.
The announcement was made on Monday, noting that she will succeed Alexandra McKenzie and officially assume office in September to continue efforts in strengthening diplomatic ties in the Southeast Asian region.
Ms Barlow joined the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office in 2002, holding diplomatic postings in Tokyo between 2006 and 2011 and serving as trade policy and economic diplomacy counsellor in Seoul from 2015 to 2018.
She later served as deputy head of mission and consul general in Kathmandu from 2022 to 2023 before becoming the British ambassador to Laos in 2023.
As an ambassador, she promoted diplomatic relations, encouraging cooperation and boosting investment opportunities between the UK and Laos in areas such as defence, trade, education, and energy.
