President Donald Trump has said that the U.S. and Iran had “very good discussions” amid a protracted war that has lasted five months, signalling hope that the Strait of Hormuz will soon reopen.

Mr Trump said that the U.S. negotiated all day with Tehran on Tuesday to come up with lasting solutions that will serve the interests of both nations, hinting that a deal was imminent.

“They had an all-day negotiation,” Mr Trump told Fox News, adding that the Strait of Hormuz “is going to be open very soon”.

The American leader, however, threatened to attack Iran should the country abort reconciliation talks.

“If they back out again, they are going to get hit really hard,” said Mr Trump.

Iran, which continues to assert sovereignty over the Strait of Hormuz, earlier rejected a proposal that would have had it share voluntary fee collection from oil ships with Oman.
