Amnesty International has vowed to make Senator Francis Fadahunsi as an example in its campaign against impunity and inflammatory rhetoric by politicians in the country.

“We are going to use this man as an example to show that the impunity of Nigerian politicians cannot continue and be tolerated again,” the organisation’s country director in Nigeria, Isa Sanusi, said during an interview on Channels TV interview on Thursday.

Mr Fadahunsi, a federal lawmaker representing Osun East senatorial district, at a rally allegedly instructed the All Progressives Congress supporters in Ilesa and other parts of the state to kill Accord Party members ahead of Saturday’s governorship election.

The politician’s comment attracted criticisms, with Governor Ademola Adeleke’s campaign council demanding his immediate arrest and prosecution.

However, Mr Fadahunsi later denied giving the instruction, noting his statement was misinterpreted.

Mr Sanusi upbraided the politician for inciting people to violence ahead of the poll, adding that the action was punishable under international and Nigerian laws.

“We’re going to use him as an example. We have terrible politicians say terrible things ahead of election. But this one is exceptional. A situation whereby somebody came out on record saying, “Kill them whenever you find them.” I believe that person doesn’t deserve any peace again because of advocacy of hatred is a crime under international law as well as Nigerian laws,” he noted.

Mr Sanusi added that the organisation would also launch an international “name-and-shame” campaign against politicians who advocate electoral violence in the country.

“We will do an international name-and-shame of those advocating electoral violence. Amnesty International has branches in 150 countries. We will ensure they are named and shamed in those countries and alert their governments to how dangerous these people are. The people have to hold them to account if the government fails to do that,” he added.
