NTAC chief urges Nigerians to celebrate birthdays with acts of kindness
Yusuf Yakub, the director-general of the Nigerian Technical Aid Corps (NTAC), has called on Nigerians to use special occasions, such as birthdays, to extend kindness and support to the less privileged rather than focusing on personal gifts.
In a statement issued on Thursday to mark his 58th birthday, Mr Yakub appealed, saying the occasion offered an opportunity to reflect on life’s blessings and the responsibility to give back to society.
He urged friends, associates and well-wishers wishing to celebrate him to redirect such gestures towards people in need within their communities.
“Rather than buying a birthday gift for me, I would be most fulfilled if you could find someone around you who is in need and offer that person some care, support or encouragement. You may also choose to visit an orphanage and put a smile on the face of a child,” he said.
The NTAC director-general said birthdays should go beyond celebrations, describing them as moments for gratitude, reflection and renewed commitment to humanity.
He encouraged Nigerians to make compassion a daily practice, noting that small acts of kindness could restore hope and dignity to people facing difficult circumstances.
Mr Yakub said his 58th birthday was “less about receiving gifts and more about giving hope, sharing love and touching lives”, adding that he desired to be remembered for the positive impact made on the lives of others.
Mr Yakub, born in Kaduna to the royal family of Captain Buba, of Huba origin in Adamawa, began his career in grassroots politics before representing his local government and state constituencies.
He later served two terms in the House of Representatives representing Gombi/Hong federal constituency, where he also chaired the House Committee on Foreign Affairs.
President Bola Tinubu appointed Mr Yakub as NTAC boss on August 22, 2023.
Since assuming office, Mr Yakub has overseen the agency’s mandate to deploy skilled Nigerian professionals to partner countries, while also maintaining interests in philanthropy, real estate, and agriculture.
