A 40-year-old man, Roger Borbobil, has been arrested for allegedly possessing 91 parcels of a substance suspected to be Indian hemp at the VIP bus terminal at Kwame Nkrumah Circle in Accra, Ghana.

In a statement on Friday, the Ghana Police Service said the suspect was arrested by the Special Operations Assistant on Thursday.

The police said the suspect had been sighted at the terminal with three suitcases containing the suspected substances.

“Preliminary investigations suggest that some loading boys at the terminal detected an unusual smell coming from the suitcases and alerted the Police.

“A team of officers subsequently proceeded to the scene, arrested the suspect and retrieved the three suitcases containing 91 parcels of compressed dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp,” it said.

It noted that the suspect reportedly valued the substances at GH¢33,600.

According to the police, during interrogation, the suspect indicated that he was a farmer from Sovie Kudzra, near Kpando in the Volta North Region.

“He allegedly told investigators that he cultivated Indian hemp himself but had acquired the parcels in his possession from another farmer identified as Benjamin, from the same community,” it said.

The statement explained that the exhibits would be forwarded to the Police Forensic Crime Laboratory for analytical examination and a report.

It added that the suspect was in police custody assisting investigations and would be put before the court to face justice.
