Pakistan’s Supreme Court on Tuesday ordered jailed former Prime Minister Imran Khan to be moved to hospital.

The three-judge panel, which delivered the judgement after complaints about Mr Khan’s health, said the politician should be moved to Shifa International Hospital in Islamabad for examination by physicians.

The court also ruled that the former prime minister would be allowed to meet with his family weekly, including telephone calls with his sons.

“We are mindful of the constitutional and legal obligation to safeguard the life, health, dignity and security of the prisoner,” the panel stated.

The ruling came after Mr Khan’s lawyers complained about his lack of access to medical experts amid struggles with various health conditions, including poor eyesight.

Parliamentarians ousted the 76-year-old from office through a vote of no confidence in 2022.

In 2023, he was sentenced to three years in jail in a corruption case, a sentence that barred him from running for elective office.

The ex-Pakistani PM in January last year also received 14 years in prison over a land corruption case, while his wife, Bushra Bibi, received seven years.
