Foreign minister Johann Wadephul plans to campaign for a German seat on the UN Human Rights Council for the 2027-2029 term in Geneva on Tuesday.

Mr Wadephul will meet International Committee of the Red Cross head Mirjana Spoljaric and UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk.

A meeting with World Health Organisation head Tedros Ghebreyesus is also planned.

The election for the UN Human Rights Council seat is set for October at UN headquarters in New York.

Germany and Ireland are competing for the two seats allocated to Western European countries.

Germany last served on the body from 2023 to 2025.

According to the Foreign Office, Germany has been an elected voting member of the council five times since it was founded 20 years ago.

Germany’s bid for a non-permanent seat on the UN Security Council in early June was unsuccessful, when EU member states Portugal and Austria secured seats.

The setback prompted a debate about the value of Germany’s substantial contributions to the UN.
