Fans of legendary Nigerian musician, Sunday Adegeye, popularly known as King Sunny Ade(KSA), have  celebrated him with goodwill messages as he marks his  80th birthday.

The fans on Tuesday flooded social media platforms with glowing tributes and felicitations for the jùjú music maestro, who has spent more than six decades on stage.

@NigeriaStories, a Nigerian digital news and storytelling platform, earlier shared birthday wishes for the legend in a post on its verified X account.

The post reads: “Happy 80th birthday to King Sunny Ade.”

In reactions to the post, fans, admirers and colleagues of the legend continued to celebrate him with prayers and best wishes.

King Sunny Ade, born on September 22, 1946, in Ondo State, began his musical career with Moses Olaiya’s Federal Rhythm Dandies.

He later formed the Green Spots in 1967, a band that subsequently became African Beats, as he developed his distinctive jùjú sound.

The sensational singer gained international recognition in the 1980s after signing with Island Records and releasing several albums, including Juju Music and Synchro System.

KSA is acclaimed as the undisputed king of jùjú music, a vibrant genre blending traditional Yoruba rhythms, talking drums, and modern western instruments.

His music draws on Yoruba musical traditions, including talking drums, guitars, call-and-response patterns and praise singing.

Among other feats, his acclaimed 1980 album “Syncro System” earned him his first Grammy nomination in the Ethnic/Traditional Folk Recording category, making him the first Nigerian Grammy award nominee ever.

His 1998 album ‘Odu’  was also  nominated for Best World Music Album at the Grammys.

He has received numerous awards and in December 2016 he was inducted into the Hard Rock Café Hall of Fame, and then the Headies Hall of Fame in February 2021.

The octogenarian is also a recipient of the Member of the Order of the Federal Republic (MFR), a national honour recognising his contribution to the development of the Nigerian music industry.

His 80th birthday has drawn tributes from fellow music veterans, including Ebenezer Obey-Fabiyi, who celebrated KSA’s  musical journey and recalled their decades-long relationship.
