The United States has banned selected Canadian imports amid a raging trade war between the two countries. The White House published the bans early Tuesday, applying them to a range of products including Canadian alcoholic drinks, molasses, motorcycles and dairy byproducts.

The products are estimated to total around $19.9 billion in Canadian imports, according to the American Action Forum.

The latest U.S. move came amid a trade feud that had already resulted in crushing tariffs on tens of billions of dollars’ worth of goods.

On Monday, President Donald Trump said Canada would eventually back down, saying he wanted a fair deal with the country in the coming weeks.

“They take advantage of us. They feel entitled. There’s nothing they have that we need. I think what’s going to happen is over the next three to four weeks they’re going to come to us, and they’re going to say, ‘We’re going to get rid of all the tariffs.’ We’re going to win everything,” Mr Trump stated.

Meanwhile, Canada’s trade minister, Dominic LeBlanc, accused the U.S. of “imposing illegal and unjustified tariffs on sectors of their economy that were causing considerable hardship to businesses and workers across the country”.

According to him, countries were discussing alternatives to the current situation.

Mr LeBlanc insisted that the Canadian government’s priority remains protecting and supporting workers and businesses from “these unjustified actions”.

“Our core focus is on what we can control: building strength at home, diversifying our partnerships abroad, and building Canada strong for all Canadians,” he stated.

The two countries have been enmeshed in a trade dispute since Mr Trump took office for his second term in early 2025. Their relationship worsened after negotiations for a new deal failed in August, leading to a barrage of tariffs from both sides.
