Carabao: Man City, Liverpool advance to quarter-finals; Brighton, Chelsea out

Defending champions Manchester City are through to the quarter-finals of the Carabao Cup following a penalty shootout win over Brighton at the Etihad Stadium on Wednesday night.
Malick Junior Yalcouye opened the scoring for Brighton half an hour in before Mateo Kovacic equalised for Man City 10 minutes later from an assist by Phil Foden.
Two minutes into the second half, Georgino Rutter restored Brighton’s advantage, calmly slotting Joauen Hadjam’s pass into the bottom-right corner of the post.
However, Viktor Reiss deflected home a free-kick from the edge of the 18-yard box from Rayan Cherki in the 72nd minute to level the score for the hosts and send the match into a penalty shootout.
Man City went on to win 4-3 in the shootout to book a spot in the last eight after Yasin Ayari and Lewis Dunk missed for Brighton, while only Kovacic failed to score for City.
At Anfield, Liverpool knocked Chelsea out of the competition with a 6–5 penalty shootout win after the match ended 1–1 in regulation time.
Cody Gakpo and Morgan Rogers scored from the penalty spot for their respective sides.
The trio of Valentin Barco, Emmanuel Emegha and Wesley Fofana fired blanks for Chelsea during the shootout, while only Konstantinos Tsimikas and Ryan Gravenberch missed their kicks on Liverpool’s end.
In the other matches, Bournemouth thrashed Aston Villa 3-0, Fulham beat Crystal Palace 1-0 on the road, while Sunderland secured a 3-2 win over Brentford.
