Distributed Denial of Secrets, a non-profit data transparency group, hacked the Department of Homeland Security website on Wednesday and exposed information on 40,000 staff, including undercover and surveillance agents.

The hackers exposed contact details such as names, email addresses, and phone numbers of employees working in several DHS agencies, including Immigration and Customs Enforcement, U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, Homeland Security Investigations, and others.

The DHS acknowledged the digital invasion in a statement saying it is “aware of a potential breach and is actively working to address the situation swiftly and effectively”.

The hackers created an online search tool that compartmentalised information to help users narrow down their search.

Emma Best, co-founder of Distributed Denial of Secrets, released a statement saying the leak demystifies the “key personnel in DHS’ ever-escalating rendition and deportation programmes.”

Ms Best also said the hack was intended to “replace anonymity with accountability” and help journalists uncover the truth.

“They have our information, so it’s only fair that we have theirs,” the hacking group wrote in a note attached to the leaked information.

In September, hacking group ShinyHunters breached the Federal Bureau of Investigation database and claimed to have stolen information on thousands of employees.
