Police confirm killing of man on wanted list

The police command in Akwa Ibom says a man simply identified as Mkpowo was killed during a confrontation with youths of the Essien Udim community on Wednesday.
The police spokesman, Timfon John, disclosed this in a statement in Uyo on Thursday.
Ms John said that the deceased had been on the police wanted list for his involvement in criminal activities within the state.
She said that Mkpowo was suspected to be the leader of a criminal gang that had been terrorising residents of the area.
The police spokesperson said that the incident occurred at about 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday when some youths of the community reportedly attempted to apprehend the deceased.
The police spokesperson said that in the course of the encounter, the suspect reportedly brought out a locally-made pistol and fired at the youths.
Ms John, however, said the youths overpowered Mkpowo during the encounter in which he sustained head injuries.
She said that the deceased was subsequently rushed to a hospital where he was confirmed dead.
Ms John said that his remains had been deposited in a morgue for preservation and further actions.
It would be recalled that the police in Akwa Ibom recently intensified operations against the criminal gang, leading to the invasion and destruction of its identified hideout.
She said that a locally made pistol, one live cartridge, and an expended cartridge were recovered during the operation.
Ms John said the commissioner of police, Baba Azare, commended residents for their willingness to support security efforts and provide credible information to the police.
She urged the public to remain vigilant and report suspicious movements to the nearest police station for prompt action.
