The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has urged the European Union (EU) to support the democratic rights of Nigerians ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Mr Obi disclosed this in a statement on his official X handle on Friday, following a meeting with ambassadors of EU member states in Abuja.

He said the meeting, which was held on Thursday, a day after his engagement with the British High Commissioner, centred on various issues, particularly the cost of living and the welfare of Nigerians.

“Our discussions centred on a number of issues, especially the cost of living and welfare of Nigerians, the state of governance in our country, and the forthcoming elections,” he wrote.

He said the engagement provided an opportunity to discuss Nigeria’s democratic process and the need to protect citizens’ rights to freely choose their leaders.

“I reiterated my appeal to the international community to support the democratic right of Nigerians to freely and fairly choose their leaders in a peaceful environment.

“The international community should stand with the Nigerian people in defending this fundamental right.

“The very essence of democracy is respect for the right of citizens to freely make their choices and determine who governs them.” he noted.

Mr Obi further appreciated the EU for inviting him and providing an opportunity to interact with the ambassadors.
