The Defence Headquarters on Tuesday said a military fighter jet killed dozens of terrorists suspected to be members of the Islamic State of West Africa Province (ISWAP) in their enclave in Borno State.

The operation was carried out on Sunday by the air component of ‘Operation Lafiya Dole’ in Tumbun Rego on the fringes of Lake Chad.

Defence spokesperson John Enenche in a statement disclosed that the terrorists use the camp as a logistics hub.

However, the statement also noted that after the airstrikes, fighter jets and helicopter gunships were swiftly deployed to the location to neutralise any surviving ISWAP members. The military did not disclose the specific number of terrorists killed during the airstrikes.

The Air Task Force therefore dispatched Nigerian Air Force (NAF) fighter jets and helicopter gunships to attack the location. Overhead the target area, significant ISWAP elements were observed.

They were engaged in successive passes by the NAF attack aircraft resulting in the destruction of the terrorists’ structures as well as the neutralisation of several of their fighters.
