NAMCS plans to involve 15 million Nigerians in poultry farming

Beneficiaries would be given poultry feeds and taught skills needed to run their poultry farms successfully.

The National Agricultural Mechanization Cooperative Society (NAMCS) says all is set to involve 15 million Nigerians, particularly women, in poultry farming.

Aminu Abdulkadir, Vice President of the cooperative society disclosed this on Saturday at a news conference.

He said that each woman selected for the programme would be empowered with 100 birds, to enable them to earn income for the family and boost food sufficiency in the country.

He said that the women would also be given poultry feeds and taught skills needed to run their poultry farms successfully.

According to him, during a period of three years, assessors will be visiting the poultry farmers to assess their progress.

Mr Abdulkadir disclosed that the business was designed with the support of the Federal Ministry of Trade and Investment, as well as some commercial banks.

“Over 80 per cent of our women, our wives, our mothers and sisters are still at home only taking care of their families.

“NAMCS, in the wisdom of its management, has decided to create something for the women and even when they are at home and taking care of the family, they can also earn money to support the family.

“The empowerment is all about women nurturing birds for wealth. All of us here were at one point nurtured by women. We believe strongly in the capability, ability of our women and this programme is uniquely designed for them.

“Women nurturing birds for wealth and empowerment programme is strategically designed to take advantage of the opportunity that are available in the poultry business value chain,” Mr Abdulkadir said.
