A 22-year-old man, Mubarak Olarenwaju, was docked in an Ojo Magistrates’ Court in Lagos for attempting to escape from the court.

The police charged Olarenwaju, whose house address was not given, with willful damage to court property and attempted escape from lawful custody.

The prosecution counsel, Insp Edet Ekpo, told the court that the defendant committed the offence on January 7.

He alleged that the defendant removed the ceiling board of a place in the court he was held pending his arraignment and attempted escape from custody.

Mr Ekpo told the court that the roof collapsed on the defendant, which led to a court official rearresting him.

The offence, he said, contravenes sections 21(a) and 355 of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State 2015.

The defendant pleaded not guilty to the charges.

Magistrate Taiwo Popoola admitted the defendant to bail of N50,000 with two sureties in like sum.

The case was adjourned until February 3 for mention.
