The potters said Kano residents still use clay pots for cooking, water storage and as flower-stands for house and office decorations, among others.

Pottery makers in Kano have asked the administration of Governor Abdullahi Ganduje for permanent clay excavation sites to boost their businesses.

Chairman of the group, Sani Abdullahi, in an interview on Saturday, in Wudil local government, said the farmlands where they get clays belong to individuals.

“We are therefore calling on the state government to assist us with sites for excavation of clay” he said.

He stated that the owners of such places often eject them at will, which affects their operations. “Anytime we were ejected, we have to suspend production until we get an alternative place,” he decried.

Justifying their request, the chairman said some residents in the state still use clay pots for cooking, water storage and as flower-stands for house and office decorations, among others.

He said that allocating permanent places for them at the outskirts of towns would enable them to burn the potteries and prepare them for use without problem.

Mr Abdullahi added that this would also go a long way in protecting people’s health, particularly those who are asthmatic or have sight problems.
