Shireen Abu Aqla, a veteran Al Jazeera reporter in Palestine, has been shot dead.

Al Jazeera accused Israeli forces of killing the journalist on Tuesday. Israel is claiming she might have been shot by Palestinian militants.

Ms Abu Aqla was killed while she was covering a raid into the Jenin refugee camp in the West Bank. Al Jazeera has called on the international community to hold Israeli forces accountable for their “intentional targeting and killing” of Ms Abu Aqla.

“In a blatant murder, violating international laws and norms, the Israeli occupation forces assassinated in cold blood Al Jazeera’s correspondent in Palestine,” Al Jazeera said in a statement.

Another Al Jazeera journalist, producer Ali Al-Samudi, was shot in the back while covering the same event, and he is currently undergoing treatment.

On Wednesday, the spokesperson for the Israeli Occupation army issued a statement regarding Ms Abu Aqla’s death.

“During the military activity in Jenin camp, Palestinians fired heavily at the forces, in addition to throwing explosive devices, as the forces responded with fire, without causing any casualties,” the spokesperson said, “An investigation is underway into the possibility of journalists being shot at, which may have come from Palestinian gunmen”

In the course of her career, Ms Abu Aqla worked in several places including the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA), Voice of Palestine Radio, Amman Satellite Channel, Miftah Foundation and Monte Carlo Radio, and in 1997 with Al Jazeera satellite channel.
