Billionaire casino owner Sheldon Adelson has died. His company, Las Vegas Sands, announced that he died on Monday night from complications related to non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma, which he had been treating.

Mr. Adelson had taken a leave of absence earlier this month to continue treating the disease. He was 87 years old.

He was known for founding Las Vegas Sands, the world’s biggest casino operator, he was also known as outgoing U.S. President Trump’s largest donor.

He became a Republican after he had certain disagreements with democrats over foreign policy such as the United States support for Israel and tax policies for corporate bodies.

His wealth went to funding Israeli and Jewish causes, starting the Israel HaYom, a Hebrew language conservative paper. He was a vocal advocate for moving the U.S. embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, offering to pay for part of the cost of building the new embassy.

He also funded medical research and the Republican Party. Mr. Adelson and his wife, Miriam, have donated more than $500 million to federal campaigns. In 2016, the Adelsons donated $5 million to President Trump’s inaugural committee and $500,000 to the White House aides legal defense fund.

Mr. Adelsons will be laid to rest in Israel, where his wife, Miriam Adelson was born, the Las Vegas Sands said.
