Following the plan by Nigerian telecoms operators to increase tariffs on their services by 40 per cent, subscribers have insisted they must “see value for our money” before any hike.

The Association of Telephone, Cable TV and Internet Subscribers of Nigeria (ATIC) through their chairman Sina Bilesanmi on Friday called for consultation between telcos and their customers for better service delivery.

”Subscribers ought to be consulted and carried along while discussing any move to increase tariff for calls, data and text messages,” Mr Bilesanmi complained. ”We are not enjoying quality service.

“It is unfair to fix prices without considering consumers,” he emphasised.

On March 31, the Association of Licensed Telecommunication Operators of Nigeria (ALTON) threatened a 40 per cent increase in tariffs for phone calls, data and text messages, due to rising cost of doing business.

Mr Bilesanmi, however, said that subscribers and service providers ought to work together for better understanding, adding that any move to increase the tariffs would be unacceptable by subscribers.

He urged ALTON to consider offering  Nigerians free calls every Independence Day anniversary.
