AANI celebrates Abdulsalami at 84, hails contributions to democracy in Nigeria

The Alumni Association of the National Institute (AANI) has felicitated a former head of state, Gen. Abdulsalam Abubakar (retd), on his 84th birthday, describing him as one of the most consequential figures in Nigeria’s democratic journey.
The President of AANI, Emmanuel Okafor, conveyed the association’s goodwill in a statement signed by AANI’s Publicity Secretary, Ifeanyi Ngama, on Saturday in Abuja.
Mr Okafor said Mr Abdulsalami occupied a unique place in Nigeria’s history owing to his distinguished military career and pivotal role in the country’s transition from military to democratic rule.
According to him, the former head of state demonstrated exceptional patriotism and statesmanship when he assumed leadership of the country in June 1998.
He noted that within 11 months in office, Mr Abdulsalami initiated key reforms, facilitated the release of political detainees and oversaw the process that culminated in the adoption of the 1999 Constitution.
Mr Okafor said the former military leader’s decision to hand over power to a democratically elected civilian administration on May 29, 1999, laid the foundation for Nigeria’s Fourth Republic.
He described the transition as one of the most significant contributions to democratic governance in the country’s history.
The AANI president also commended Mr Abdulsalami’s post-retirement contributions to peacebuilding and conflict resolution within and outside Nigeria.
He noted that as chairman of the National Peace Committee, the elder statesman continued to promote peaceful elections, political dialogue and national cohesion.
According to him, Mr Abdulsalami has also served as a regional peace envoy, contributing to mediation efforts in different parts of Africa.
Mr Okafor described the former head of state as a patriot, statesman and peacemaker whose life had been dedicated to the service of Nigeria and humanity.
He prayed for continued good health, strength and wisdom for the elder statesman as he marks his 84th birthday anniversary.
