Abducted corps members regain freedom after days in captivity

The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members abducted along the Owerri-Onitsha Road in Imo State have regained their freedom after spending days in captivity.
The victims were abducted on Thursday while travelling from Ibadan, Oyo State, to orientation camps in the South-East and South-South.
The Nigeria Police Force confirmed the release in a statement on Wednesday by Ani Iniedu, the force’s spokesperson.
The police said the victims were rescued on Wednesday at Amakohia Ubi Village in Imo by the police and other security agencies.
“The victims were rescued on 7th October 2026 at Amakohia Ubi Village, Imo State, following sustained search-and-rescue operations,” he said.
He stated that the victims were taken for medical assessment and necessary care.
Mr Iniedu noted that efforts were ongoing to apprehend those responsible for the abduction, as the police and other security agencies sustained coordinated operations towards bringing all culpable persons to justice.
The victims were travelling along the Owerri-Onitsha Road near Umunoha in Mbaitoli Local Government Area of Imo State when their buses were attacked by suspected gunmen at about 6:30 a.m.
