Abeokuta woman arraigned over alleged N2.2 million visa fraud

A 31-year-old woman, Aminat Lawal, appeared before a magistrates’ court in Abeokuta on Friday over an alleged N2.2 million visa fraud.
Ms Lawal, whose address was not provided, is facing a two-count charge of obtaining money under false pretence and stealing.
She, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.
The prosecutor, Kehinde Fawunmi, told the court that the defendant committed the offences with some others still at large in November 2024 in Abeokuta.
Mr Fawunmi said the defendant collected the money from the complainant, Yusuf Fadipe, and that she would help him secure a South African visa, a representation he knew was false.
The prosecutor said the defendant instead presented the complainant with fake travelling documents as genuine.
He said the defendant converted the money for her personal use.
Mr Fawunmi said the offences contravened sections 390(9) and 419 of the Criminal Law of Ogun State, 2006.
The magistrate, O.O. Odumosu-Akeba, granted the defendant N500,000 bail with two sureties in like sum.
Ms Odumosu-Akeba ordered that the sureties must be licensed bondsmen registered with the Ogun State Judiciary.
She adjourned the case until April 24 for mention.
