The Abia State Commission for the Welfare of Disabled Persons has pledged continued support for the Cancer Trust Fund initiative of the Albinism Association of Nigeria.

The commission made the pledge when members of the state chapter of the association embarked on an awareness walk to Government House, Umuahia, on Friday.

Receiving the group, the chairman of the commission, David Anyaele, said the government supported initiatives that protected persons with albinism from health risks.

He said the proposed Cancer Trust Fund would help create awareness and sensitisation against skin cancer at the community level.

Mr Anyaele reaffirmed the commitment of Governor Alex Otti’s administration to the welfare and dignity of persons with disabilities (PWDs).

He said the administration’s approach to disability inclusion was anchored on respect for humanity and ensuring that no one was excluded.

He noted that the commission had taken advocacy beyond its office by engaging communities on the rights of PWDs.

“The commission is making sure that we go around to create awareness,” Anyaele said.

He recalled interventions for persons with albinism, including the provision of sunscreen to protect them from prolonged sunlight exposure.

Mr Anyaele assured the association of the commission’s continued support for initiatives that improved their wellbeing and protection.

He also expressed excitement over the support given to the albinism community by the Governor’s wife, Mrs Priscilla Otti.

“Just last week, the First Lady hosted persons with albinism for the second time this year,” Mr Anyaele said.

He added that participants were enlightened on the prevention and management of albinism and received food, medical and financial support.

Earlier, the chairman of the association, Enyinnaya Nwosu, said the fund would support awareness programmes while drawing attention to the protection of persons with albinism against skin cancer.

He said the association planned to take its campaign to schools and communities to educate parents on albinism and health protection.

Mr Nwosu expressed appreciation to the commission for its support and attention to the concerns of persons with albinism in Abia.
