Abia govt to focus more on science practicals in secondary schools

The Abia government says it will focus on more practical methods of teaching science subjects in secondary schools.
The Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Goodluck Ubochi, said this in Umuahia on Thursday during the kick-off of the science competition for all science teachers.
ASSPPAA-ISBORS Platforms Limited organised the competition in collaboration with the Abia State Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education.
Mr Ubochi said the measure would enable the students to perform better in science subjects like Physics, Chemistry and Biology.
He said the science competition would bring out the best in science teachers and positively impact senior secondary school students’ performance in science-related fields.
Mr Ubochi commended Governor Alex Otti for his special interest in education, including regular payment of teachers’ salaries, provision of educational facilities and others.
According to him, Abia teachers are now receiving their rewards on earth.
Also, Hope Nwosu, a director in education ministry, appealed to the Abia government to ensure that science teachers formed the bulk of the proposed mass teachers’ recruitment.
Ms Nwosu commended the state government for rehabilitating technical schools and called for providing enough science laboratories.
She said that lack of facilities negatively affected students’ performance in public schools in the past.
