The Abia government on Monday began enforcing restrictions on commercial motorcycle operations across designated areas.

The affected areas include Umuahia, Aba and Ohafia, following the expiration of a one-week grace period.

Commissioner for Information, Okey Kanu, confirmed the enforcement during a briefing after the State Executive Council meeting.

Mr Kanu explained that enforcement was initially scheduled for June 22 but was postponed to allow wider compliance. He said the extension considered thousands of citizens who rely on motorcycle transport for their livelihoods and daily activities.

“The enforcement officially took effect on Monday,” Kanu said, adding that penalties remained N20,000.

He stated that impounded motorcycles would only be released after owners completed registration and verification requirements.

The commissioner clarified that private motorcycles could operate freely if properly registered and documented. However, he stressed that private motorcycles were prohibited from carrying passengers for commercial purposes.

Mr Kanu said approved commercial operators must wear government-approved identification vests while conducting their activities.

He added that all motorcycles, tricycles and commercial vehicles must meet registration requirements.

The commissioner disclosed that toll-free complaint lines had been established to report misconduct and enforcement abuses. He said the move was designed to promote transparency during the implementation process.

“No economic or political consideration can outweigh the value of human life,” Mr Kanu stated.

He added that the government remained committed to creating a safe and secure environment for residents.

Mr Kanu appealed to transport operators, residents and community leaders to cooperate with enforcement authorities. He said the policy would be implemented fairly while respecting citizens’ rights and dignity.

The commissioner also provided updates on infrastructure projects carried out by the Ministry of Works. He disclosed that direct labour projects were executed at 14 locations between June 16 and June 29.

Five projects had been completed, while another project was added to the ministry’s maintenance schedule. Completed projects included the 1.19-kilometre Obikabia-Umueleke Road in Isiala Ngwa North council area. Others were the 550-metre Uzoma-Ohokobe-Afara-Ukwu Road and the 390-metre Chief Nkoro Street link road.

Mr Kanu also mentioned maintenance works on Ujari Road and the desilting of drains along Faulks Road. He said the drainage works were aimed at preventing flooding during the rainy season in Aba.

A new direct labour project, the 90-metre Green Avenue construction in Aba, has also commenced.

The commissioner disclosed that 24 road projects were currently being executed by contractors statewide. He said significant progress was being recorded across the projects, reaffirming the government’s commitment.

Mr Kanu said sustained infrastructure development would improve connectivity and residents’ quality of life.
