Abuja drivers face criminal charges for cheating employer

Two drivers, Aliyu Adamu and Yusuf Abubakar, were arraigned before the Upper Area Court, Gwagwalada, on Thursday for cheating their employer.
The suspects, who reside in Mangu, Plateau, are charged with criminal conspiracy, breach of trust and cheating.
The prosecution counsel, Dabo Yakubu, told the court that the defendants’ employer, Mohammed Yusuf, reported the matter at the police area command office in Gwagwalada, on March 8.
Mr Yakubu said the complainant sent the duo to deliver some goods loaded in his truck to a customer in Awka, Anambra, sometime in December 2023.
He said the defendants conspired and asked the customer to pay the money into their account.
“They converted the money for personal use and never gave it to their employer,” he said.
The prosecutor said the offences contravened sections 97, 312 and 322 of the Penal Code.
Section 312 of the penal code prescribes seven years imprisonment or an option of fine for anyone found guilty of criminal breach of trust.
The defendants pleaded not guilty to the charge.
The judge, Abdullahi Abdulkarim, admitted the defendant to bail of N500,000 each, with one surety each, in like sum.
He ordered that the sureties must reside within the court’s jurisdiction and should provide valid means of identification.
Mr Abdulkarim adjourned the case until April 23 for a hearing.
