Abuja: FEMD urges safety compliance as excavation site wall collapses, kills labourer

The FCT Emergency Management Department (FEMD) has called for strict adherence to safety regulations at construction sites following the collapse of a building foundation in Radio House, Area 8, Garki.
Monday Adie, head of the FEMD Search and Rescue Team, made the call in a statement reacting to the incident, which occurred at about 5:50 p.m. on Monday.
The statement, signed by Nkechi Isa, head of public affairs at FEMD, was issued Tuesday in Abuja.
Mr Adie expressed condolences to the family of the victim, a 25-year-old labourer, who lost his life when the foundation wall collapsed during excavation about seven feet underground.
Two people were trapped in the rubble; one was rescued alive, while the other was fatally injured.
The Federal Fire Service received a distress call around 5:50 p.m. and promptly responded to rescue the trapped individuals.
Reacting to the incident, the acting director-general of FEMD, Abdulrahman Mohammed, stressed the need for strict compliance with safety regulations to prevent similar tragedies.
He highlighted the importance of involving qualified professionals in construction projects and urged developers to avoid quackery.
Mr Mohammed also urged residents to call the 112 toll-free emergency numbers whenever a disaster occurred.
