On Tuesday, the Karu Upper Area Court in Abuja sentenced a 32-year-old man, Felix Zachariah, to 18 months in prison for stealing a generator and a gas cylinder.

The judge, Isa Adamu, did not give the convict a fine option but warned him to desist from committing a crime.

The convict, who had no fixed address and no means of livelihood, was charged with criminal trespass and theft.

He pleaded guilty to the charges.

Earlier, the prosecution counsel, Ayotunde Adeyanju, told the court that the victim (complainant), Monica Ojobi of Karu Site, Abuja reported the matter at the Karu Police Station on March 1.

According to Mr Adeyanju, the complainant had alleged that while she was observing her prayers inside her apartment, the convict jumped into her compound through the fence.

He said the convict bent the security wires and, in the process, stole one generator, valued at N300,000, and one gas cylinder, the value of which had yet to be ascertained before he was apprehended.

The offence contravened sections 348 and 288 of the Penal Code.
