ACCI congratulates Okonjo-Iweala on reappointment as WTO director-general

Mr Obegolu noted that Mrs Okonjo-Iweala’s impactful advocacy for Africa and the developing world was commendable.

The Abuja Chamber of Commerce and Industry has congratulated Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala on her reappointment as Director-General of the World Trade Organisation.  

ACCI’s President, Dr Emeka Obegolu, in a statement, described the reappointment as a well-deserved recognition of her exceptional leadership, remarkable vision, and unwavering dedication to fostering global trade and economic growth.

 Mrs Okonjo-Iweala made history in 2021 as the first African and the first woman to lead the WTO.

 Her first term, marked by exemplary leadership, will end on August 31, 2025.

The commencement of her second term on September 1, 2025, reflects the confidence of WTO member nations in her ability to navigate the complexities of global trade and strengthen the WTO’s position as the premier facilitator of international commerce.

Mr Obegolu, applauded the WTO General Council’s decision, stating that, “Okonjo-Iweala has infused the WTO with a renewed sense of purpose. She has championed policies that foster inclusive growth, improve the ease of doing business, and enhance trade opportunities globally. Her impactful advocacy for Africa and the developing world is commendable, and we are confident her second term will further advance her vision for a fairer and more prosperous global trade system. During her tenure, Okonjo-Iweala implemented critical reforms to address economic disparities and create opportunities for underrepresented regions, particularly in Africa. Her commitment to pro-business policies has been pivotal in driving economic growth and fostering collaboration among WTO member states.’’ 

Speaking on behalf of the Nigerian business community, Mr Obegolu, who also leads the Organised Private Sector in the Federal Capital Territory and its environs, reiterated ACCI’s support for Mrs Okonjo-Iweala’s leadership.

 He expressed optimism about continued collaboration with the WTO under her guidance to unlock trade opportunities for African businesses and promote sustainable development across the continent.
