The Accord Party candidate for Oshodi/Isolo Constituency I in the Lagos State House of Assembly, Oluwarotimi Ajibola, has urged political leaders to embrace dialogue, inclusiveness and selfless service to strengthen democracy.

Speaking on Tuesday in Lagos, Mr Ajibola said elected and aspiring leaders must place the collective interest of the people above personal or partisan considerations to promote sustainable democratic development.

“As leaders, we must promote dialogue over division, participation over exclusion, and service over self-interest,” he said.

Mr Ajibola said democracy could only thrive where public institutions upheld accountability, fairness and justice.

He added that citizens’ confidence in government depended on transparency and responsible leadership.

“Our democracy will only become stronger when our political institutions consistently reflect the values of accountability, fairness and respect for the people’s will,” he said.

The Accord Party candidate stressed the need for political actors to respect opposing views and resolve differences through constructive engagement rather than inflammatory rhetoric.

“When leaders listen to one another and put the nation first, they create the conditions for peace, stability and shared progress,” he said.

Mr Ajibola also called for greater youth participation in governance.

According to him, young people should be given opportunities to contribute meaningfully to policymaking and nation-building through democratic and constitutional means.

“Our young people are not just the leaders of tomorrow; they are critical stakeholders in today’s democratic journey.

“They must be empowered to participate responsibly in shaping the nation’s future,” he said.

Mr Ajibola urged governments at all levels to strengthen public confidence through transparency in public administration, equitable distribution of resources and prompt delivery of dividends of democracy.

“Good governance is measured by the impact it has on the lives of ordinary citizens. When government is accountable and responsive, democracy becomes more meaningful and enduring,” he said.

He also urged Nigerians to remain actively engaged in the democratic process through peaceful participation, civic responsibility and respect for the rule of law.

Mr Ajibola said collective commitment by leaders and citizens would help build a more united, prosperous and inclusive nation.

“Together, we can strengthen democratic institutions and ensure that governance truly serves the aspirations of the people,” he stated
