Actor Ben Jones dies of heart attack at 84

Mr Jones’s wife, Alma Viator, said he passed away on Sunday from a “massive heart attack”.

American actor Ben Jones, popularly known for his role as Cooter Davenport, the trusty mechanic in the hit comedy series ‘The Dukes of Hazzard’, has died at 84.

Mr Jones’s wife Alma Viator confirmed in a Facebook post that he passed away on Sunday from a “massive heart attack”.

“I lost the love of my life today. Ben passed from a massive heart attack. He was home resting in his favourite chair waiting for the Braves to come on and whoop the Yankees. 

“Ben had the most amazing, rich, full life. He loved and was loved by so many. He will be missed. I loved him so so much,” Ms Viator said.

The late actor was born on August 30, 1941, in North Carolina.

In 1978, he secured the role of Cooter Davenport, the trusty mechanic, in ‘The Dukes of Hazzard ’, which ran from 1979 to 1985.

The 84-year-old moved into politics in 1986, ran for Congress twice, and was elected as a Democrat representing Georgia’s 4th Congressional District, serving from 1989 to 1994.

He is survived by his wife and his two children, Rachel and Walker Jones.
