Adamawa electoral body assures transparent outcome in LG polls

He said that the election was being conducted successfully as promised in 20 out of the 21 local government areas.

Adamawa State Independent Electoral Commission (ADSIEC) has pledged to announce whoever emerges winner at the end of the ongoing election for council chairmen and councillors in the state.

Mohammed Umar, chairman of the commission made the pledge on Saturday in an interview with journalists, while monitoring the election process in Yola-North Local Government Area.

He said that the election was being conducted successfully as promised in 20 out of the 21 local government areas.

Mr Umar said that the affected local government was Yola-North and the problem was failure of the electoral officer to distribute the electoral materials on time, but it has been resolved and voting has since started.

“As I promised the people of the state, whoever emerges the winner at the end of the day will be announced. There will be no change of results in the process”, he said.

He called on the candidates to understand that the election was like a game, where there must be a winner and a loser.

Philip Duwe, chairman Taraba State Independent Electoral Commission, who spoke on behalf of the 16 states chairmen in the country on solidarity visit to Adamawa, commended the conduct of the election.

“We are in solidarity with government and people of Adamawa in compliance with the provision of the constitution to conduct the LG polls.

“More importantly, the security of the election is very commendable, so we are happy that people are going about their normal life, going to vote and back to their base.

“Secondly we have confirmed the availability of election materials, both sensitive and non sensitive”, he said.

Ahmad Mustafa, an electorate, appreciated the orderliness and peaceful conduct of the election.

Mr Mustapha attributed the reported low turnout in the election to non-participation of the major opposition party in the state, the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Suleiman Adamu, ward head, Sabon Fegi, Yola, however, attributed the low turnout of voters to the farming season

and economic hardship in the country.
