The wife of the Adamawa State governor, Lami Fintiri, on Wednesday, called for urgent action to end Gender-Based Violence (GBV) in Nigeria.

Mrs Fintiri  made the call in Yola while presenting cash donations to 12 victims of GBV from the three senatorial districts of the state.

“Most of the victims of GBV suffer as a result of the action of either their loved ones, trusted persons, close relatives or family members.

”Parents, especially mothers need to be watchful of their children,” she said.

She said providing medical care, good counselling, psychological treatment and access to legal services by individuals, government agencies and corporate organisations would help in assuaging the feelings of the victims.

Mrs Fintiri emphasised the need to protect the identity of the already traumatized victims.

”Exposing them would further stigmatise them in the society.

“My office will continue to champion the campaign and sensitization against the menace.

”I am committed to reducing the cases of GBV across the 21 existing Local Government Areas in the state,” she said.

In her remarks, a woman counsellor attached to the Hope Centre in Numan local government area, Gloria Emmanuel, thanked  the governor’s wife.

She said legal services and wise counselling were being offered to the victims free of charge in the centre.
