The Adamawa government is set to establish mobile courts for quick dispensation of matters relating to gender-based violence (GBV) and other social vices.

The Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Wunfe Anthony, said this in an interview with journalists on Friday in Yola.

Ms Anthony, who spoke while reviewing Governor Ahmadu Fintiri’s administration’s scorecard last year, said women are crucial to national growth and require support to enable them to strive.

“The Fintiri administration is emphatic towards promoting the interests of women and girls through the passing of the Violence Against Persons Prohibition Act (VAPP) and the Child Act.

“This has led to the establishment of mobile courts for on-the-spot trials of offenders of gender-based violence (GBV) and other social vices, as all our fundamental human rights are enshrined in the law.

“This would empower women to speak up, thereby breaking the tradition of ‘suffering in silence’ and protecting the child’s rights by abolishing child marriage and child labour,” she said.

Highlighting more of Mr Fintiri’s achievements, she commended the governor for allowing women to serve in his cabinet, thereby creating gender equality.

The commissioner said the governor appointed women at various levels of leadership who are productive and have displayed great talent and intellect in their respective fields.

“We have the deputy governor, chief justice, judges, commissioners of information and finance, among others, all women serving in various leadership capacities,” the commissioner said.

Ms Anthony said the ministry also collaborated with international and local organisations to empower women on various skills across the 21 local governments in the state.

She said the trades, which include tailoring, soap making, leather craft, farming, poultry, and baking, have enabled women to become productive job creators and improved their economic well-being.

Assessing the governor’s general performance, she said the administration has made significant strides in economic growth, attracting new investment and supporting local businesses.

“From agriculture to manufacturing, the state is experiencing a resurgence of economic activities, creating jobs and opportunities for the citizenry.

“He invested in road construction, introduced new initiatives that improved access to quality education, and upgraded healthcare facilities with improved maternal and child health,” she noted.
