The Adamawa government says the recent conviction and N3 million fine imposed on an ADC governorship aspirant signal stricter enforcement of laws against defacing public infrastructure.

The chief press secretary to Governor Ahmadu Fintiri, Humwashi Wonosikou, stated this during a news conference in Yola on Thursday.

Mr Wonosikou said the court judgment affirmed the government’s authority to protect public assets and should serve as a warning to political parties ahead of the 2027 elections.

He said the prosecution of ADC governorship aspirant, Mr Omar Suleiman, was not politically motivated but intended to enforce existing laws on campaign poster placement.

According to him, the law prohibits indiscriminate pasting of posters on flyovers, bridges, public buildings, streetlights, road medians and other government facilities.

He said public infrastructure was funded by taxpayers and should not be converted into campaign advertising spaces.

Mr Wonosikou said the law against defacing public property had always been in force and applied equally to all citizens, regardless of political affiliation. He added that the court judgment had removed doubts about the law’s enforceability and confirmed that no individual or political party would receive special treatment.

The spokesperson said the administration remained committed to preserving investments in urban renewal through discipline, civic responsibility and adherence to the rule of law.

He urged political parties and supporters to use approved billboards, designated advertising spaces, newspapers, radio, television, digital media and other lawful campaign platforms.

Mr Wonosikou also directed relevant agencies to intensify surveillance across the state and ensure strict compliance with the law.

He warned that anyone found violating the law would be arrested and prosecuted accordingly.

He further reaffirmed the government’s commitment to protecting public assets and enforcing the law fairly, firmly and without exception.
