Wife of the minister of defence, Oghogho Musa, has called on Nigerians to support the Armed Forces and the families of fallen soldiers, describing them as the “unseen pillars” of national security.

Mrs Musa made the call at the Humanitarian Day event, as part of the 2026 Armed Forces Celebration and Remembrance Day (AFCRD), for members of the Barracks Community on Saturday in Abuja.

She said the courage of military personnel was sustained by the patience, resilience, and sacrifice of their families.

The minister’s wife said the gathering was a reminder that the defence of the nation extends far beyond the battlefield, saying that reaches into homes, communities, and hearts across Nigeria.

“While our soldiers bear the visible weight of duty, their families carry an equally profound burden, quietly, consistently, and with steadfast courage.

“It is therefore both fitting and necessary that this year’s celebration shines a light on the human side of military service.

“The deliberate inclusion of humanitarian-focused activities reflects a growing understanding that the welfare, morale, and dignity of our soldiers and their families are central to national security and unity.

“The theme for this year, “Celebrating the Strengths Behind Our Soldiers”, captures a simple but powerful truth: behind every uniform is a family of spouses, children, and parents, whose support forms the unseen pillars of our armed forces,” she said.

Mrs Musa said the event had been thoughtfully designed as a path of care, inclusion, and shared joy.

The activities, according to her, include Kiddies’ Corner, sports, talent showcases, and mentoring engagements for teenagers, adding that every activity reflects their belief in the next generation.

“We also pause to remember our fallen heroes, those who paid the supreme price in service to our country. We honor their mission and extend our deepest gratitude to their families.

“Your strength continues to inspire the nation, and supporting your families remains a solemn national duty.

“The provision of educational materials, hygiene kits, and essential items today reflects our collective responsibility to give back to those who protect us.

“While our soldiers defend the nation, the nation must in turn defend their dignity, welfare, and future,” she added. 

In her remarks, Hassana Pheelangwa, wife of the permanent secretary, Ministry of Defence, said the event was organised to celebrate spouses and children of soldier who had continued to serve the nation with bravery.

According to her, even in the most challenging circumstances, it is this quiet, unwavering strength that forms the foundation upon which soldiers stand.

“Our programme today is filled with meaningful, engaging, and fun activities designed to bring joy to everyone present.
