The African Green and Sustainability Institute has lauded the appointment of Omotenioye Majekodunmi as the director-general of the National Council on Climate Change.

“In the spirit of progress, we celebrate the appointment of Mrs Omotenioye Majekodunmi as the third Director-General of the NCCC,” a statement on Friday signed by the executive director of AGESI, Eugene Itua, said. “A dynamic expert in climate finance and environmental law, Mrs. Majekodunmi embodies the kind of innovative leadership and global acumen that is essential for driving Nigeria’s just transition and continental climate ambitions.”

AGESI reaffirmed its commitment to partnering the NCCC under Mrs Majekodunmi’s leadership to “unlock equitable climate finance opportunities for Africa’s green entrepreneurs, accelerate the deployment of renewable energy infrastructure, champion data-driven, inclusive policy frameworks for climate action, empower women and youth as climate trailblazers and changemakers, and amplify regional cooperation for a sustainable, low-carbon future”.

The statement assured the new NCCC chief that “together, we will amplify our impact, deepen our collaborations, and build a resilient Africa that thrives in harmony with its environment”.

Meanwhile, AGESI also commended the outgoing NCCC director-general, Nkiruka Madueke.

“At AGESI, we believe that visionary leadership is the backbone of transformative climate action. With this ethos, we extend our warmest commendation to Dr. Nkiruka Madueke, whose tenure as the second Director-General of the NCCC was marked by unwavering commitment, strategic depth, and collaborative integrity,” the statement said.

According to the institute, Ms Madueke built upon the foundation laid by pioneer NCCC boss Salisu Dahiru. It noted that her stewardship guided the council through “critical moments of growth”.

“Her work to institutionalise climate resilience, advance multilateral engagements, and uphold transparency continues to influence the fabric of Nigeria’s climate governance.

“As she transitions onward, we recognise her legacy as one that has strengthened the NCCC’s voice across Africa and beyond. We at AGESI remain deeply grateful for her service,” the institute stated.
