The African Group of Negotiators Experts Support (AGNES) has congratulated Jimoh Ibrahim on his election as chairman of the United Nations (UN) General Assembly fifth committee.

The fifth committee is responsible for the budgetary and administrative affairs of the UN and plays a critical role in supporting global governance.

In a statement issued on Friday in Abuja, AGNES Director of Technical Services and Nigeria Country Director, David Awolala, described the election as ‘significant’.

Mr Awolala said Mr Ibrahim’s emergence reflected the international community’s confidence in his leadership, diplomatic experience and strategic vision in global affairs.

According to him, the appointment demonstrates Nigeria’s growing relevance and influence within the multilateral system amid increasing demands for accountability and institutional efficiency.

He noted that the fifth committee oversees the UN’s budgetary and administrative functions, making its leadership vital to organisational effectiveness.

Mr Awolala said the committee’s work directly supports global priorities, including sustainable development, climate action, humanitarian response and institutional reforms across member states.

“Senator Ibrahim’s election is a testament to his intellectual depth, diplomatic competence and unwavering commitment to advancing Nigeria’s interests on the global stage.

“We are confident that he will provide the leadership required to strengthen transparency, accountability and effectiveness within the United Nations system,” Mr Awolala stated.

He also emphasised the growing importance of climate governance and sustainable development within international policy discussions and decision-making processes worldwide.

He stressed that Africa required stronger representation and strategic partnerships to address challenges relating to climate change, adaptation, resilience, and development financing.

Mr Awolala reaffirmed AGNES’ readiness to collaborate with Mr Ibrahim and Nigeria’s permanent mission to the UN in advancing Africa’s priorities.

He said the collaboration would focus on climate governance, climate finance, loss and damage, capacity strengthening, and sustainable development initiatives across Africa.

Mr Awolala added that AGNES remained committed to supporting evidence-based policies and technical solutions that promote resilience, economic growth, and sustainable development.

He expressed optimism that Mr Ibrahim’s tenure would create opportunities for Nigeria and Africa to influence global decisions and strengthen international partnerships.

According to him, the appointment will help promote inclusive development outcomes while enhancing Africa’s voice in critical global governance and policy processes.

Mr Awolala wished Mr Ibrahim a successful and impactful tenure as chairman of the UNGA fifth committee, expressing confidence in his leadership.
