The remains of Success Ezenwafor, a six-year-old pupil of Nnamdi Azikiwe University Primary School in Awka who drowned following a severe flash flood tragedy, were laid to rest on Wednesday in his hometown of  Ekwulobia, Aguata Local Government Area of Anambra State. 

The incident occurred as the young pupil was on his way to school on Tuesday, when a shuttle bus conveying other pupils and adults was stuck by floodwaters after heavy torrential rainfall along the Awka–Nibo–Nise–Enugu-Ukwu Ring Road.  

Rescue efforts led by the state’s police command, with support from locals and emergency responders, were able to rescue nine passengers, including seven pupils and two adults. 

The rescued victims were taken to Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University Teaching Hospital (Amaku), Awka, for medical treatment.

But Success was swept away and was later found dead after a search operation 24 hours after the incident.

The Anambra State government had issued a flood alert advising residents to remain vigilant, heed predictions by the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMET), and avoid unnecessary movements during heavy rainfall, either on foot or by vehicle.

It added that residents should take necessary precautionary measures to ensure personal safety, including advising relocation from flood-prone areas where necessary and to seek help promptly during emergencies.

The incident drew intense agony from some Nigerians who commiserated with the pupil’s parents.

Reacting to the incident, an X user @IfeanyiOny95278, said, “This is heartbreaking. Little Success was only six years old. My deepest condolences to his family and everyone affected by this tragic flood incident. May his soul rest in peace.”
