Aiyedatiwa, Deji of Akure call for use of culture to promote unity, economic growth

Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa of Ondo has urged traditional rulers to use culture to foster unity, economic growth, and development.
Mr Aiyedatiwa, who stated this at the annual Ulefunta festival in Akure on Saturday, said his administration will always recognise the importance of cultural identity in driving social cohesion.
The Ulefunta festival is one of the most respected cultural heritage of the Akure people, a yearly celebration of the Deji of Akureland’s annual leave.
During the seclusion, known as annual leave, the Deji is expected to commune with the ancestors and pray for his people.
Speaking at the festival, Mr Aiyedatiwa explained that the annual festival also symbolised the strength of the Akure tradition and the unwavering faith of their ancestors.
The governor, represented by the Commissioner for Culture and Tourism, Rasheed Badmus, reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to supporting Akure Kingdom institutions and preserving its cultural heritage.
“As we celebrate this sacred tradition, let us reflect on the significance of Ulefunta. Let us remember the sacrifices of our forebears, who laid the foundation for our prosperity. Let us honour their legacy by embracing our common heritage and fostering unity and cooperation in the Akure kingdom.
“Kabiesi, your exemplary leadership and vision have transformed Ulefunta into a festival of distinction comparable to the Ojude Oba in Ijebu. Beyond its cultural essence, it has become a unifying platform for Akure sons and daughters towards tackling contemporary socio-economic challenges and inspiring collective growth of their beloved kingdom,” he said.
The Deji of Akure, Aladetoyinbo Aladelusi, described the Ulefunta festival as an emerging national brand attracting widespread attention.
The monarch noted that the festival had always been an opportunity to attract cultural values and ideals and promote the people’s heritage, saying the traditional rulers would continue to use the festival to promote peace.
Traditional rulers who joined the Deji of Akure to celebrate this year’s festival include Olowo of Owo, Ajibade Gbadegesin Ogunoye; Owa of Igbara-Oke, Francis Adefarakanmi Agbede; the Alara of Ilara- Mokin, Oba Aderemi Adefehinti; and Amapetu of Mahin kingdom, Olusegun Akinyomi.
